The Roborigger product was originally developed by TENSA Equipment and Roborigger products are now in a separate entity with external investors (including TENSA Equipment as a major shareholder), called Roborigger Pty Ltd. TENSA Equipment has successfully been building fully certified lifting and drilling equipment for the global offshore oil and gas industry for over 10 years and is still supplying products and services for this industry. Roborigger inherits this breadth of experience and longevity – we are here for the long haul.

About the role

We are looking for an Electrical, Electronics and Controls Engineer who will be responsible for the onboard electrical and controls systems of Roborigger.

This covers:

• Roborigger electrical systems
• Onboard microcontroller and software
• Compliance with electrical and control aspects of global machinery safety requirements
• New product development

The candidate must be able to prepare detailed work scopes and product roadmap in the above areas and have skills to review and check work in all areas. The candidate is expected to be the primary electrical designer.

Electrical engineering

The role requires a knowledge of the above systems with a high level of expertise in control systems and low voltage AC and DC systems programmed in C++.

• The candidate must be a highly proficient electrical engineer able to manage the design, build, testing and operational support of Roborigger products. This requires a knowledge of AC and DC motor control up to 1000V, control theory, electrical machinery safety standards and communications protocols such as Canbus, Modbus, etc.

The system uses LiFePO4 batteries and the candidate will be responsible for the battery management systems.

• The candidate will be expected to undertake the electrical design tasks personally and work with the manufacturing technicians for the manufacture, testing and operational support. The candidate must have a strong ability to troubleshoot and fault find eg using a scope to troubleshoot serial communications, hardware and software problems.

Onboard micro-controller and software

• Must have a good up to date knowledge of available microprocessors and the industry standards for software programming. The majority of the software programming may be done by others but the candidate must be able to program proficiently and have a good knowledge of best practices to manage this.
• The candidate must have a good understanding of sensors and interfaces appropriate to product design. Experience with using data from accelerometers and gyros is essential.

Onboard IoT system and computer
Roborigger has a Linux based management computer that undertakes edge processing and communicates data to the IoT monitoring package. This system interacts with the onboard control and electrical systems and sensors.

• The candidate must have a strong knowledge of Linux and a working knowledge of IP communications protocols and interaction with IoT systems.
• The candidate must be up to date with available AI hardware solutions for edge devices and able to select specify and manage the implementation of new processor platforms, sensors and interfaces.

New product development

• Understand the state of the art technology such as LoRa, HaLow and radio communications.
• Lead team to develop in-house long-range remote control and advanced autonomous control.

Your day to day role

Overall, you will define the procurement, assembly and testing processes so the manufacturing process for Roborigger can be fast and reliable. Testing to allow subassemblies to be pretested prior to installation on Roborigger.

You will stay abreast of the latest developments in the product space and be able to demonstrate interaction with peers on technical issues. It is expected that you would be a member of Engineers Australia and attend EA or equivalent technical functions.
You will be required to interact with a multi-disciplined product team consisting of software engineers, mechanical engineers, operations and training personnel. Communication skills are important.

You will have a strong commercial sense and understand the business needs.

You will be able to document the work in a highly methodical and consistent manner and be able to provide documentation that will allow maintenance and repairs to be undertaken by service personnel worldwide.

Where you will be working

The work will be generally located at our assembly and service facility in Wangara, WA. The work will also involve visits to sites when supporting the equipment.

About you

You will have an electrical or electronics university bachelors degree or higher as well as a minimum of 5 years’ experience (If the experience level is less than this, the candidate will still be considered if experience is highly relevant).

 Your skills include but are not limited to:

• Experience supervising a team of engineers
• Experience in an environment where electrical and electronic components are designed, manufactured and tested is preferred.
• The experience in designing and building equipment.
